Lyme Disease Awareness MonthOn February 13, 2014, Florida governor Rick Scott signed a proclamation, declaring May "Lyme Disease Awareness Month" at the request of the Florida Lyme Disease Association (FLDA).

As the proclamation states, "according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Lyme disease is a rapidly emerging infectious disease and the CDC reported 67 confirmed and 51 probable Lyme cases in Florida in 2012. The CDC's statistics show an overall increase in Lyme cases in Florida and other areas of the US in recent years, and since 2003 there have been a total of 550 confirmed and 51 probably cases in Florida. Using the CDC's estimate that there are ten times more cases than reported, this would equate to 5,500 confirmed and 510 suspected cases in the state. Lyme disease cases have been reported in 86% of Florida counties from 1992 to 2011, and the majority of Florica counties are considered 'endemic' for Lyme disease by the CDC."

Florida's Lyme Disease Awareness Month in May coincides with the first ever Lyme in the South Music Fest on May 17, 2014 at River City Brewing Company in Jacksonville, FL.
